One of the most anticipated movies of the Oscar season has arrived! Well, the first trailer has, anyway. On this week’s episode of Vanity Fair’s Little Gold Men podcast, hosts Mike Hogan and Richard Lawson—Joanna, and Katey (!!!) will be back next week—kick off with a breakdown of the trailer for Fences, the Denzel Washington-directed adaptation of the revered August Wilson play, starring a fiery Washington and Viola Davis. Both actors are very much part of the awards conversation, even though, uh, no one’s seen the movie yet. Still, “it’s at the top of a lot of people’s curiosity lists,” says Richard.

From there, Mike and Richard discuss another new trailer—for the promising 20th Century Women, which might mean big things for Annette Bening. After that, Richard gives a quick rundown of the anticipated thriller The Girl on the Train, which could have its long-overdue star, Emily Blunt, in the awards conversation, if it weren’t already such a crowded field. Then Mike talks about going to a screening of The Birth of a Nation and trying to square that movie’s powerful message with the troubled past of its creator and star.

Finally, Mike and Richard try to make sense of a strange, sort of sparse best-actor race this year. Denzel Washington looks strong, but then again, so does Ryan Gosling. Could this year be all about Fences vs. La La Land? Little Gold Men is saying yes. Download the episode on iTunes or stream it below.
