Bubba Wallace Doesn’t Think Trump Should be Tweeting About Him Either

Bubba Wallace criticized President Donald Trump on Wednesday for being “wrong on the factual information” after Trump falsely claimed that a noose found in a garage used by Wallace—the only Black driver in NASCAR—was a “hoax.”

“When I first read [Trump’s tweet], I was like, man, there’s so much more things that are going on in the world that I feel like he should be worried about,” Wallace told Jimmy Kimmel Live guest-host Anthony Anderson on Tuesday. “It’s hard to get people to understand especially when the facts are delivered on the table, and they’ve been there for two weeks now.”

Last month, NASCAR officials told Wallace a noose had been found in a garage that was assigned to him at Talladega Speedway in Lincoln, Alabama. (Wallace, who has supported the Black Lives Matter movement was also instrumental in getting NASCAR to ban the Confederate flag from its events.) An FBI investigation later revealed that the noose, which was purportedly being used as a door pull, had been in place at the location since last year, long before the garage was assigned to Wallace.

But in his tweet, Trump did not bother accurately describing these details. “Has @BubbaWallace apologized to all of those great NASCAR drivers & officials who came to his aid, stood by his side, & were willing to sacrifice everything for him, only to find out that the whole thing was just another HOAX?” Trump falsely tweeted. “That & Flag decision has caused lowest ratings EVER!”

Both Wallace and the incident have become a right-wing talking point in the weeks since, with some commentators erroneously comparing the situation to what happened with Jussie Smollett, who has been accused of making false statements to police as part of an alleged hate-crime hoax in 2019. (At the time, Smollett alleged his attackers invoked President Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan. He has maintained that he did not stage the incident himself.) But as Wallace reiterated on Tuesday, he had not even seen a picture of the noose until after he spoke to the FBI a second time. “I did not report it, just was told about it and next thing you know, one thing led to another,” he said during the interview.

Of Trump, Wallace added, “To be late to the party is one thing and to be wrong on the factual information is another. But all in all, he did get one thing right in his tweet, though: the great officials that continue to stand behind me, NASCAR drivers and officials that continue to stand behind me through it all. He got that part right. It’s a great sport that I’m proud to be a part of.”

As Wallace told Anderson, the support of his fellow competitors—who surrounded Wallace's car in solidarity and to denounce racism—meant a lot at the time, and continues to inspire him.

“At the end of the day, on any given weekend, we are competitors, we kind of give each other that look—bragging rights look—we want to beat each other. In that moment there, everybody let their guard down or let themselves be a human being and show their human being side,” he said. “I thought that was pretty powerful to show the world that our sport can come together, the sport of NASCAR, where a lot of people have their doubts about, that we show this type of unity and love and understanding. And that everybody can do the same thing, so I thought that was so strong and so impactful.”
