At this point, what do we expect from Samantha Markle, half sister of Meghan, other than for her to comment on the day’s Meghan-related news in some sort of awful and snide manner? At a certain point, you could, with pretty decent accuracy, auto-generate her tweets, which always find the same shape of outrage and boil down to the same central talking point: MEGHAN, WHY ARE YOU IGNORING US?

So, yes, on the occasion of Prince Harry’s 34th birthday on Saturday, Samantha took out her Android (it feels like she probably has an Android, rather than an iPhone, right?) and tweeted . . . a GIF of a hamster stuffing its face with a cake. Samantha had a point to make, you guys, and she needed a hamster GIF to do so. She accompanied the GIF with some well-wishes for the Duke of Sussex: “Happy Birthday Harry! As you ‘mack down’ on your birthday cake, think about the birthday wishes you never extended to your FATHER-IN-LAW.” (If she was trying to make some specific reference with “mack down,” it was not immediately evident what it was.)

Samantha—whose Twitter, curiously, remains private—has previously criticized Meghan for not wishing their father, Thomas, happy birthday in July. She also compared Meghan herself to Cruella de Vil in August, right before the Duchess of Sussex’s 37th birthday. (Samantha and Meghan have reportedly not spoken for several years.)

By all accounts, Harry had a quiet, restful birthday weekend with Meghan at their cottage in the Cotswolds, where it is highly unlikely he took notice of Samantha’s GIF missive. On Monday, Meghan revealed her first solo project as a royal, as she wrote the forward to a new charity cookbook which “celebrates the power of cooking to bring people together.”
