Here’s the “Emotional Gut Punch” of a Thanksgiving Film You’ve Been Waiting For

From the people with the best taste in the movie business.

Just as you’ve probably begun thinking of all the ways your Thanksgiving family dinner can go wrong, a trailer arrives to bring these fears to life. From the studio that brought us the critically adored Room, from the title that stirred up buzz from the film-festival circuit and our own Joanna Robinson called “an emotional gut punch of a film,” comes the first trailer for Krisha.

Trey Edward Shults has written and helmed three short films so far in his career, one of which was further developed into his feature-film directorial debut. That film is Krisha. He won SXSW’s Grand Jury Prize for it, and it’s not hard to see why. The trailer, bathing in pull quotes from reviews, sees an aging woman returning home for Thanksgiving to the family she abandoned years ago. As the day goes on, tensions build, secrets are revealed, and it looks more and more likely that this holiday dinner won’t be one for the family photo album.

Chances are you won’t know the names of the film’s cast, like Krisha and Robyn Fairchild, but you’ll know A24 Films. The distributor has been making a name for itself by releasing such bang-for-their-buck titles such as the David Foster Wallace film The End of the Tour, Scarlett Johansson’s sultry Under the Skin, and Noah Baumbach’s While We’re Young. It’s their cinematic tastes alone that make Krisha a title to watch.
