The Laughter Awakens

Even James Corden and J.J. Abrams Can’t Resist the Charms of Chewbacca-Mask Lady

“I’m such a happy Chewbacca!”

In the year and change that he’s hosted The Late Late Show, James Corden has enlisted countless celebrities to help him get to work in his “Carpool Karaoke” segments. So it should be no surprise that he eventually found himself on a less productive journey: when the comedian brought a certain Wookiee-faced viral celebrity onto Monday night’s show, the two of them got nowhere fast. But she did teach him the same lesson she recently taught the Internet: that sometimes, it’s best to slow down and enjoy the little things. Like ridiculous Star Wars masks.

For once, Corden found himself in the passenger’s seat—a position that evidently made him cranky.

“Right, I know that you’re pleased with your purchase, but you know I have got places to go,” Corden told Candace Payne, the mom who went viral thanks to a truly joyful unboxing video in which she unveils an excellent Chewbacca mask. (It roars when you open your mouth.) Payne was too busy playing with her mask to do any actual driving. When Corden asked if they could hurry up, she seemed unfazed.

“It’s not me making that noise!” she said. “It’s the mask! I’m such a happy Chewbacca!”

Exasperated, Corden tried to take the wind out of his driver’s ever-buoyant sails: “You know that that doesn’t sound anything like Chewbacca, right?” But before he could Grinch up the moment, out popped an unexpected guest star—Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams in the flesh.

Abrams complimented the mask, and delivered just one director’s note—after putting on a mask of his own.

“It’s less like this,” he said, imitating a subpar roar. “And it’s more like this.”

Before long, even the previously grumpy Corden joined in, proving yet again that concentrated joy is the most viral emotion of all.
