Meghan Markle’s Latest Outfit Was Also a Favor to a Friend

The duchess arrived in Dubbo, Australia, looking a little bit country, and Serena Williams, thousands of miles away, approved.

What would you do for a friend? Not an acquaintance, not a colleague, but a friend, friend. Like someone in the top five pals you FaceTime first to let announce you’re engaged or that there’s a really good sale at Sur La Table this weekend. What would you do for them? Jump off something very high? Throw yourself in front of a bullet? Agree to throw the baby shower even though you’ve got a ton going on right now?

Would you wear your close personal friend’s label in day two of your royal Australian tour when all the world is watching? Certainly you would if you could for a friend, especially if the blazer is cute and in the price point somewhere between “too cheap” and “inappropriately expensive for someone whose life is largely funded by taxpayers.” You would do this tomorrow, certainly, right? You’re just waiting to be invited on that royal national tour that you keep writing to your local palace about.

And so would Meghan Markle, American duchess and one of us. She wore a piece from her friend Serena Williams’s clothing collection on Wednesday, day two of her 16-day Australian tour with new husband and soon-to-be father of her child, Prince Harry. She deplaned in Dubbo looking a little bit country in the blazer, a white button-down, jeans by Aussie brand Outland, and booties. (“A little bit country” in the English sense. More sport coat than ten-gallon hat.)

It’s a nice blazer: a hint of 80s power suit to it, but also fitted and modern and adorned with enormous pockets, which is a kindness any piece of clothing can offer. Williams, who’s spoken about how she and Markle have been “relying on each other a lot recently”, posted an Instagram gallery of both of them wearing the blazer, Markle in Australia, Williams in promo photos for the collection. “The face you make when you and Meghan have matching @serena blazers,” she captioned it.

The blazer, known as the “Boss Oversized Blazer,” is naturally sold out (the model also pairs her blazer with a Markle-style messy bun in an act of true cross promotion). But there is a “Royal Duchess Cropped Hoodie” that has “royal” written across the front that’s still available. Markle is surely saving that for day 15, after two weeks of answering baby questions, when she just wants something cozy that can speak for her.
