Molly Shannon and Will Ferrell Want to Turn the Rose Parade Into the First Comedy Event of the Year

Introducing Cord Hosenbeck and Tish Cattigan!

New Year’s Day television programming is historically dedicated to movie marathons, college football, and “whatever won”t make the hangover worse.” But Funny or Die and Amazon Prime are betting that they can make their own event out of one of the true hallmarks of New Year’s programming, the Rose Parade, which kicks off the Rose Bowl college football game in Pasadena. With the video above Amazon and Funny or Die announced a new partnership that created The 2018 Rose Parade Hosted by Cord and Tish, a live event that will stream on New Year‘s Day beginning at 11 a.m. ET.

Anyone unfamiliar enough with college football or broadcasting to just assume that Cord Hosenbeck and Tish Cattigan are the names of TV personalities you don’t know about . . . look closer. That’s Molly Shannon and Will Ferrell, in their latest reunion since Saturday Night Live, ready to translate their well-honed comedy chemistry to the tried-and-true format of parade commentary. They won’t be the first comedians to build sketches around real sporting events—Keegan Michael Key and Jordan Peele had an entire unauthorized Super Bowl show in 2016—but may be the first do it around college football, which, with rumored plans for a massive halftime show at its championship game, is making efforts this year to up its spectacle factor.
