All The Times Game of Thrones Tried to Tell You Who Jon Snow’s Parents Are

The clues were there all along.

This post contains frank discussion of Game of Thrones Season 6, Episode 10 “The Winds of Winter.” If you are not caught with the season finale, now is the time to leave.

Finally, after years and years of waiting, Game of Thrones book readers and show watchers finally have confirmation of something they’ve suspected a long time. Or as close to confirmation as they’re likely to get. The baby that Lyanna Stark held in her arms as she lay dying in the Tower of Joy? That was Jon Snow. He’s not Ned Stark’s bastard. He’s Ned Stark’s nephew. The quick cut between that baby’s face and Kit Harington’s pout should put all doubt at rest.

Ned kept the secret all those years, even from his wife Catelyn, out of fear of what his friend Robert Baratheon would do. Because Robert, Lyanna’s fiancé, is not Jon’s father. His father? That’s almost certainly Daenerys’s brother, Rhaegar Targaryen. So, yes, Jon is both Stark and Targaryen. He’s ice and fire.

While this is something book readers have suspected for a long time, it was never completely confirmed in the novels. Thanks to George R.R. Martin’s slow progress, the show got the honor of that reveal. But co-creators Dan Weiss and David Benioff have known the truth for a long time and if you knew what to look for, the show has been laying clues for this reveal for all six seasons. Here is the evidence, conscientiously gathered by YouTuber Robbie McD.

But just because Jon has this incredible destiny (ice and fire!), it doesn’t mean he’s the only hero worth considering in this epic. Daenerys is on her way to Westeros with her own impressive lineage. And as Game of Thrones continues to prove, women have every bit a claim on the Seven Kingdoms. Will it be a fight between Daenerys and Jon? Or will they unite forces to take down the White Walkers? We shall see when Game of Thrones returns for Season 7.
