Where Is Johnny Depp in the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Trailer?

Everyone's looking for Jack Sparrow in the latest swashbuckling installment.

Jack Sparrow is a wanted man—but isn't he always? In the new trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (the fifth in the franchise, if you can believe that), the rum-obsessed swashbuckler is nowhere to be found, but he's the person everyone is trying to hunt down.

He's being chased primarily by ghostly rival Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem, transformed by some truly gruesome makeup and special effects). Other newcomers to the series include Kaya Scodelario playing astronomer Carina Smyth, and Brenton Thwaites playing the son of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom).

It's a follow-up to 2011's On Stranger Tides, which saw Sparrow on a mission to find the Fountain of Youth, joined by Angelica (Penélope Cruz). The film also has the distinction of being the most expensive movie ever made, with a bloated final cost of $410 million.

Despite a number of high-profile projects in the works—including Dead Men—Depp, much like Jack Sparrow, has kept a relatively low profile as of late, following his troubling separation from Amber Heard. The actress filed for divorce a few months ago, and in court claimed domestic violence. (The allegations were later dismissed.) She later donated her $7 million settlement to the American Civil Liberties Union, “with a particular focus to stop violence against women.”

Directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, Dead Men Tell No Tales will hit theaters in May 2017.
