For the last few weeks, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been at home in Los Angeles getting ready to launch their charity, Archewell, and putting the spotlight on efforts for racial justice. Though Archewell's official launch has been delayed, the couple visited one anti-gang nonprofit and have reportedly been making calls to promote a Facebook advertiser boycott over the platform’s approach to hate speech. On Wednesday, Harry recorded a speech for the virtual Diana Awards, which honor young people who live up to the spirit of his late mother, and in it, he made reference to some of the causes that he and Meghan are supporting.

“Right now, we’re seeing situations around the world where division, isolation and anger are dominating as pain and trauma come to the surface,” he said. “But I see the greatest hope in people like you and I’m confident about the world’s future and its ability to heal because it is in your hands.”

Harry also mentioned the conversations that he and Meghan have had about how society needs to change. “My wife said recently that our generation and the ones before us haven’t done enough to right the wrongs of the past. I too am sorry—sorry that we haven’t got the world to a place you deserve it to be. Institutional racism has no place in our societies, yet it is still endemic. Unconscious bias must be acknowledged without blame to create a better world for all of you.”

Before introducing James Frater, a medical student and one of this year’s honorees, Harry mentioned that he and Prince William had personally chosen the winners together. The ceremony, which was broadcast on Instagram Live, also featured remarks from Liam Payne, Miranda Hart, and Emma Thompson, who apologized for the state of her hair.

July 1 marks what would have been Princess Diana’s 59th birthday, and it usually prompts Harry and William to open up about her legacy and the role she played in their lives. Last year, Harry spoke at the Diana Awards ceremony and discussed how fatherhood has changed his life, while William visited with mourners who had gathered at the Kensington Palace gates.
