Taron Egerton would like everyone to know that the upcoming Elton John biopic, Rocketman, will be full of saucy scenes. The biopic stars Egerton as the legendary singer in his early days, following his ascent in the music industry. In a new interview with MTV, Egerton promised that the film wouldn’t skim over John’s personal life, particularly his relationships with men.

“I really threw myself into it,” he said. “I filmed my first sex scene for this film. I feel that the movie we’ve shot is absolutely a celebration of everything that Elton John is, and part of that is his sexuality.”

That sex scene he referred to also features his co-star Richard Madden, who plays music manager John Reid in the biopic. In the interview, Egerton continued on the topic, discussing his hope for fan reaction to the film.

“I actually think the gay community will be quite surprised by quite how gay it feels,” he said. “I’ve loved every second of it. I’m not someone who is remotely perturbed by male intimacy. I’m quite proud of what we’ve done in it.”

Perhaps Egerton didn’t mean to draw a comparison between this movie and a certain other recent biopic about a gay music icon navigating stardom in the 70s. But from his comments, it certainly seems as though this film is trying to avoid drawing the sort of criticism that Bohemian Rhapsody, the blockbuster Queen biopic, has received. Both reviewers and some moviegoers dinged that film for skimming over lead singer Freddie Mercury’s relationships with men and generally fumbling its portrayal of his sexuality. Star Rami Malek, who plays Mercury, also confused fans when he was asked if Mercury was a gay icon and responded by saying, “What’s really great about him is he never wanted to, or thought of himself as being boxed into anything. He just was. . . . ‘Icon,’ I think, encompasses whatever the way you identify,” he said. That film was overseen by the living members of Queen. To be fair, complaints don’t seem to have affected the movie’s performance at the box office; it has made $473 million since its November 2 release, on a reported budget of $52 million.

Rocketman, meanwhile, is being produced by Elton John himself, which means Egerton’s performance and the way the film portrays his sexuality already have his seal of approval. The biopic hits theaters May 31, 2019.
