It’s already been a big week in the theater world for Hollywood actors. On Monday, there was news that two big-time movie stars are headed to Off Broadway (Daniel Craig and David Oyelowo in Othello). Today comes word that a big-time movie star is moving from Off to Very On Broadway. Lupita Nyong’o, who has starred in Danai Gurira’s Eclipsed for a sold-out run at the Public Theater in New York this fall, is headed to Broadway next February with the production under the direction of Liesl Tommy. Not only is it bringing a diverse cast to Broadway, a world that usually relies on sunny revivals for a sense of investment security, but it’s increasing the number of female playwrights currently on Broadway from a measly one to two. The Public Theater, which we might have to start referring to as “Home of Hamilton!” (last year we called it “Home of Fun Home!”) is developing a solid track record for shaping the future of modern Broadway.

The critically acclaimed play centers around a group of captive wives—sex slaves—during the height of the Liberian Civil War in the early 2000s. The New York Times called it “shattering.” Nyong’o recently told Playbill of the difficult role, which she had understudied for while at Yale: “I love to take on roles that require me to learn something new and really challenge my understanding of what it takes to be a successful human being. In that sense, I guess I am drawn to really hard material.”

Eclipsed closes at the Public Theater at the end of November (after two extensions!), and Nyong’o will then appear in the beyond-anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens in December, Jon Favreau’s new Jungle Book next spring, and The Queen of Katwe with Oyelowo.
