Tom Hardy is not the actor you expect him to be. He is a press-shy sometimes-action star who played Mad Max and a human tank of a Batman villain. But he is also a tender-hearted dog fanatic who once gave a nostalgic interview to Dogs Today! and leaves his favorite British cooking show on the television for his pets when he leaves the house. He has devised an extravagant anti-hacking strategy for himself that involves burner phones and private offline servers; created a TV series with his immortally named father, Chips Hardy, and has Dubsmashed Simon and Garfunkel better than you could ever dream. And now, in the latest twist to the Tom Hardy Charmingly Surprises You narrative, the actor has gone out and apprehended a real-life thief.

On Monday, police confirmed that Hardy caught a teenager who allegedly stole a motorbike on Sunday afternoon, after “the bike crashed into a car in Richmond, south-west London,” the BBC reports.

According to one eyewitness report, Tom was in the area when he noticed two 16-year-olds stealing the motorbike.

“He went off like a shot in pursuit and looked furious,” witness Arun Pullen told The Sun. When Pullen confronted Hardy afterward, Pullen said, “He told me he chased [the culprit] through my back garden and caught him around the block—but the route was like an assault course."

The Sun adds that, in Hardy’s action-star-style chase, he took an alternative path to cut off the thieves, which required him “vault[ing] walls.”

“It was mental,” Pullen said, “like he’d switched to superhero mode in an action movie. Two boys on the nicked moped had jumped a red light and smashed into a car.”

“Tom Hardy’s clearly not a man you’d mess with,” Pullen continued. “I think he even checked the kid’s ID before cops took over . . . If the kid had been dumb enough to resist I reckon Tom would have given him a good hiding.”

According to another onlooker, Hardy provided this recap of the high-adrenaline chase: “This little s*** nicked something and now he’s got himself a broken leg.”

A Richmond Police spokesman told the BBC, “We can confirm that there were two people on a stolen moped that went through a red light and crashed into another vehicle. . . .The males ran off and one was detained by Tom Hardy.”

But Pullen’s girlfriend, Kalisha, could have told the police that.

“I’m a big Tom Hardy fan and there was no mistaking him,” Kalisha told The Sun. “He looked as mad as he does on telly.”
