With one week to go until Oscar voters turn in their nomination ballots, many of this year’s hopefuls are back out in the spotlight, hoping that voters spent the holiday break catching up on their films and now need one quick reminder of their in-person charm before picking them as a nominee. Enter the 2016 Palm Springs International Film Festival gala, where Saoirse Ronan, Cate Blanchett, and Matt Damon were among the nominees, and Brooklyn star Ronan made an early case for being the most charming person on this year’s awards circuit—with a little help from Ryan Gosling.

Back in October at another one of those Oscars-adjacent events meant to raise the profile of potential nominees, the Hollywood Film Awards, Gosling apparently cracked the code on one of the industry’s great mysteries: how to pronounce Ronan’s name. “It’s Ser-sha, like inertia,” Gosling explained at the time, and according to Ronan, it stuck. “Someone sent me a photo two weeks later of a cinema in Minnesota, and on the sign in the front it said Brooklyn and then underneath it said, ‘Ser-sha, Like Inertia,’ ” Ronan told People. “I couldn’t believe it!”

Gosling, who also stars in fellow awards hopeful The Big Short, directed Ronan in his directorial debut, Lost River, and apparently forged a bond with the 21-year-old Irish star. “He’s like, Jesus or something, like a blond Canadian Jesus,” Ronan said, a statement few would disagree with, but lucky duck, hers comes from actual personal contact with the Messiah of the North.

Ronan is nominated for a Golden Globe, so this Sunday’s awards will be, for most of us, the first chance this year to see her step out on a red carpet, and maybe even give a charming acceptance speech, should she edge out competition like Room’s Brie Larson or Carol’s pair of Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. With a personal friendship with Gosling, a flourishing career, and the best unique name in Hollywood, though, Ronan’s a winner no matter what happens.
