James Corden is learning the hard way just how difficult it is to crack jokes about Harvey Weinstein. After lobbing some unsavory quips about the disgraced producer at a charity gala on Friday, the British late-night host quickly came under fire for seemingly making light of the controversy—at the expense of the dozens of women who have stepped forward to share their allegations of sexual misconduct at the hands of Weinstein.

On Sunday, Corden tweeted an apology, writing that “sexual assault is no laughing matter. I was not trying to make light of Harvey’s inexcusable behavior, but to shame him, the abuser, not his victims. I am truly sorry for anyone offended, that was never my intention.”

At the amfAR, Foundation for AIDS Research gala in Los Angeles on Friday, Corden opened the event with this joke about the weather: “It’s so beautiful, Harvey Weinstein has already asked tonight up to his hotel to give him a massage.” Multiple Weinstein accusers, most of whom are actresses, say that he invited them to various hotel rooms, where he asked them to give him naked massages. Some of them say that he would also brag about the famous women he had previously slept with him. Others, including Oscar-winning actress Mira Sorvino, claim that after they rejected him, their careers suffered.

After spare laughs and some groans, Corden quipped that “if you don’t like that joke, you should probably leave now.” He continued by joking that it’s weird watching Weinstein “in hot water—ask any of the women who watched Weinstein take a bath,” and rounded out his remarks with another joke, saying that Weinstein “wanted to come tonight, but he’ll settle for whatever potted plant is closest.” That line was a reference to the numerous women who have claimed that Weinstein masturbated in front of them without their consent, including journalist Lauren Sivan, who says the producer once blocked her path in a restaurant, masturbated in front of her, then ejaculated into a nearby potted plant.

Sallie Hofmeister, Weinstein’s spokesperson, issued a statement denying the allegations: “Any allegations of non-consensual sex are unequivocally denied by Mr. Weinstein.”

Corden’s remarks were quickly condemned by women like Rose McGowan and Asia Argento, who have both lobbed allegations of sexual assault at Weinstein.

“Shame on this pig and everyone who grunted with him,” Argento tweeted, sharing the video of Corden. McGowan concurred, calling Corden a “motherfucking piglet.”

“Hearing the audience’s vile roars & laughs show EXACTLY what kind of HOLLYWOOD you really are,” she added in another tweet, later urging CBS—the network that’s home to Corden’s Late Late Show—to make a donation to the East Los Angeles Women’s Center.
