The matriarchy is in full force at the D.N.C. this week, and many people would like to apply the matriarchal microcosm happening in Philadelphia to society as a whole. In his speech on Wednesday night, President Obama admitted that Hillary Rodham Clinton was more qualified than “both me and Bill”—a statement that had President Clinton on his feet. So, when D.N.C. fangirl Debra Messing read that Blake Shelton might be a Donald Trump supporter, she reached out to Shelton’s girlfriend, Gwen Stefani, to question his political allegiance in a very public way. Messing took to Twitter with a tweet she has now deleted, reading: “Omg. How? @gwenstefani please talk to your man to not vote for the person who will STRIP you of your rights.”

Messing is not unfamiliar to a Twitter war—she went at it with fervent Bernie Sanders supporter Susan Sarandon this spring. In this case, her comment quickly got the attention of the Twitterverse. Her critics wondered why she was bringing Stefani into the mix, as if she has control over Shelton. Messing was quick to regret doing so:

And she sent out apologies, ensuring her Twitter following that she is a fan of the country star:

Meanwhile, Blake Shelton spoke out for himself on Twitter. Unfortunately, he seemed to be a little confused about the difference between the words “enforced” and “endorsed”:

But in the end, Blake sent out a personal thank you to Messing for her apology. And as is the show of the ultimate Twitter peace treaty, they retweeted each other.

Stefani hasn’t really commented on the situation, but she did retweet one of Shelton’s tweets in which he said, “Now THIS is what you should be really talking about,” with a link to an earlier Stefani tweet. And if you couldn’t follow that, you’re the real winner here.
