Melania Trump’s spokesperson, Stephanie Grisham, has responded to a recent CNN article critical of the First Lady with an opinion piece posted on . . . CNN.com. Calling the original article by Kate Andersen Brower “yet another unnecessary attack on the First Lady,” Grisham used her CNN spotlight to list Melania Trump’s various accomplishments, and complain—in language familiar from across the Trump administration—that “absurdity abounds in the media’s coverage of our First Lady.”

Weird flex by CNN, but O.K.

Grisham complained, as Trump herself has, that there’s too much attention on “the trivial and superficial,” like what the First Lady wears or the color of her hair. Then again, when the First Lady of the United States flies to visit migrant children held in a detention center wearing a jacket that reads “I really don’t care. Do u?” or a $50,000 coat by Dolce & Gabbana, designers with their own well-documented offensive history, or a pith helmet during a visit to Africa, what else is the media supposed to do?

And now, allow us to prove Grisham right for a moment, and discuss the First Lady’s most recent fashion feat. During the White House Congressional Ball on Saturday night, Trump wore a white sequined turtleneck Céline gown, a label she previously wore when she arrived in Ghana for her Africa tour back in October. She and the president both spoke briefly—“Welcome to the White House. Enjoy the evening. Merry Christmas and happy and healthy New Year,” the First Lady said—and left the party 29 minutes after arriving.
