There are an infinite number of ways to be a mother, and that’s nowhere more apparent than on TV. This Mother’s Day, Vanity Fair’s fashion team is inspired by the mothers we have been watching and streaming on television. From the highly glamorous Avis Amberg (Hollywood) to the recently untethered and mother-to-be Esty Shapiro (Unorthodox), we envisioned what each of them might want and spoke to many of the show’s costume designers about how their characters use style to express themselves.

Here, we compiled a wish list of what some of our favorite fictional (and nonfictional) moms might want this Sunday.

Avis Amberg, Hollywood:

A true vision of what style in the golden age of Hollywood conjures, Avis embraces feathers, animal prints, and a coordinated ensemble. “Avis has a bold glamour vibe that exudes confidence and sexuality,” said costume designers Lou Eyrich and Sarah Evelyn. “She wants to be seen and heard when she enters a room.”

Carolyn Martens, Killing Eve:

Carolyn’s refined style doesn’t leave too much space for anything too frivolous. Still, she’s a fan of button earrings, a silk scarf, and a well-cut utilitarian jacket.

Mia Warren, Little Fires Everywhere:

Clockwise from left: Zero Maria Cornejo Jacket, $1,495; zeromariacornejo.com. Carolina Bucci Forte Beads Set, $1,775; carolinabucci.com. Haoma Calming Temple Balm, $45; haomaearth.com. Leica Camera, $1,195; leicacamerausa.comStill courtesy of Hulu.

Creative Mia would appreciate creating bracelets for herself and her daughter, Pearl, with this semiprecious bead kit and a cozy new cardigan made entirely by women.

Moira Rose, Schitt’s Creek:

Clockwise from left: Alexander McQueen Jacket, $3,340; alexandermcqueen.com. YSL Beauty Tatouage Couture liquid lipstick, $37; yslbeautyus.com. Tiffany & Co. Elsa Peretti Large Bone Cuff, $625; tiffany.com.Still courtesy of Pop TV.

Moira is outlandish regardless of her circumstances. “How she is perceived,” said assistant costume designer Darci Cheyne, “gives her the strength to achieve the expectations of the day.” A structured jacket, blackened bone cuff, and an updated red lip are perfect additions to her arsenal.

Betty Friedan, Mrs. America:

Clockwise from left: Noto Botanics Agender oil, $40; notobotanics.com. Marc Jacobs Jumpsuit, $1,800; marcjacobs.com. Mikimoto Pearl Necklace, $10,900; mikimotoamerica.com.Still courtesy of FX.

One of the few nonfictional characters in this guide, Betty Friedan’s powerful personality translates to her style. “I chose many bold prints and spirited combinations as a subtle allusion to her fearlessness,” said costume designer Bina Daigeler. We hope she would love a refreshed pearl necklace and poppy-floral Marc Jacobs jumpsuit.

Esty Shapiro, Unorthodox:

Clockwise from left: Gianvito Rossi Flat, $695; gianvitorossi.com. Masterclass All-Access Pass, $180; masterclass.com. Gucci Sheer lipstick in Goldie Red, $42; sephora.com. Prada Top, $1,840; prada.com.Still courtesy of Netflix.

Young Esty is finding her feet in the world outside of Williamsburg. “Once she arrived in Berlin,” said costume designer Justine Seymour, “her world changes, her wardrobe lightens up.” A membership to MasterClass would help fulfill her desire to learn and a bright Gucci lipstick will reflect her new beginnings.

Maeve Millay, Westworld:

Clockwise from left: Gabriela Hearst Blazer, $1,550; mytheresa.com. Cartier Earrings, $8,500; cartier.com. Aquazzura Shoe, $825; aquazzura.com. Chanel Nail Polish, $28; chanel.com.Still courtesy of HBO.

Elegantly feminine, Maeve’s signature plum color ripples through her wardrobe. “Maeve is no longer catering to the male gaze as she did in her saloon costume,” said costume designer Shay Cunliffe.

C.J. Walker, Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker:

Clockwise from left: Chloé Atelier des Fleurs perfume in Magnolia Alba, $250; nordstrom.com. MaxMara Trench Dress, $1,790; maxmara.com. Louis Vuitton Travel Case, $1,200; louisvuitton.com. Manolo Blahnik Pump, $895; manoloblahnik.com.Still courtesy of Netflix.

As the first female self-made millionaire, C.J. Walker traveled frequently for her hair-care line. A slingback Manolo Blahnik heel with a spectator feel and a monogram Louis Vuitton travel case would complement her lifestyle.

Rainbow (“Bow”) Johnson, Black-ish:

Clockwise from top left: Gucci Silk Jacket, $2,890; gucci.com. Armani Bag, $1,295; armani.com. Jennifer Fisher Hoops, $550; jenniferfisherjewelry.com. Fenty Beauty Blush, $20; fentybeauty.com.Still from NBC/Getty Images.

Upbeat and energetic, Bow loves bright colors and a statement earring. This raspberry Gucci jacket is right up her alley as are the Jennifer Fisher hoop earrings.

Tiffany DuBois, Insecure:

Clockwise from top left: Monica Rich Kosann Necklace, $1,285; monicarichkosann.com. Valentino Dress, $2980; valentino.com. Maison Noir Wine, $20; maisonnoirwines.com. F. Miller Body Oil, $57; fmillerskincare.com.Still courtesy of HBO.

As a new mother, Tiffany is starting to find a sense of balance: “She is still trying to hold on to her fabulousness while getting into a new routine,” said costume designer Shiona Turini. A mix of high fashion, cozy staples, and a piece of jewelry to commemorate her new family seem just the ticket.
