Rihanna and Calvin Harris Release an Immediate “Song of the Summer” Front-Runner

Five years after teaming up for “We Found Love.”

It’s been five years since Rihanna and Calvin Harris collaborated on “We Found Love” (a big day for revisiting monumental things that took place five years ago, today!). That song—off Rihanna’s 2011 Talk That Talk—was the longest-running No. 1 single of that year (and also marks Rihanna’s most successful single, which is obviously a significant feat, considering her oeuvre). Euphoric and joyous and a marked departure from the kinds of songs that were reaching the top of the charts at the time, the jam was, and we apologize for using a term like this, a “game changer,” and still holds up very well to this day, as anyone who has been at a bar after midnight when it comes on can well attest.

Now, with only a few days warning, the pair are back, with a new song, “This Is What You Came For.” Unbeknownst to us, the song had actually been teased a few weeks earlier, when Taylor Swift, who is dating Harris, posted an Instagram shot from Coachella in which she is wearing a jacket emblazoned with what we now know is the song’s art.

The song is more subdued than “We Found Love” (“subdued” is a funny word to use to describe a Calvin Harris dance track, but you’ll see what we mean), though it is basically impossible to listen to this—even on your first listen—and not toss your laptop against the wall and shimmy around your apartment, jumping on the kitchen table during the first set of Rihanna’s “Youuuu—ooooohhhh”s (each Rihanna “you” is like a new shot of adrenaline). The song also has already received about the most glam recommendation a song can get: Swift posted three photographs from Gigi Hadid’s 21st birthday party last night and used lyrics from the song to caption all of ’em.

Expect to be hearing this one in any and all pharmacies and clothing stores you enter through at least 2018.
