After loosening him up with talk of Concussion, Independence Day, and a possible Bad Boys 3 (!), charismatic young BBC presenter A.Dot asked Will Smith about his kids. Praising Jaden and Willow’s “freedom of expression,” A.Dot asked Smith if that was something he “consciously encouraged them to have.” No doubt thinking of his kids’ enigmatic interviews and boundary-pushing style, Smith joked, “Yeah, I think it may have been a mistake.”

No, this isn’t Smith throwing his own kids under the bus. His tone throughout the interview is very light. But letting loose a classic, booming Will Smith chuckle, he did add, “I think we might have gone too far.” Then, taking a slightly serious tone, Smith addressed the question about how he, as a dad, responds to any jokes the public might crack at Jaden’s expense.

Jaden is 100 percent fearless, he will do anything. So as a parent it’s scary, it’s really terrifying — but he is completely willing to live and die by his own artistic decisions and he just doesn’t concern himself with what people think.

Jaden—who has described previous highly publicized moves as “experiments”—recently modeled women’s wear for Louis Vuitton.

Jaden is certainly never afraid to put himself out there, be it dressing in a Batman suit on a couple of occasions or declaring Blake Lively’s Age of Adaline one of the best movies he’s ever seen.

Getting into the details of how he parents his two children with with Jada, Smith explains that there are different rules for Willow and Jaden. Willow’s older brother gets a little more freedom because, as Smith puts it, 17-year-old Jaden travels in a pack of boys that constitute their own “small army.” And though he tries to have “the same rules” for Willow, he points out that it’s a “different world” for a 15-year-old girl. But it sounds like Willow isn’t taking this double standard lying down. “We’ve been struggling,” Smith admits as he describes Willow pushing the boundaries of her curfew. Sounds like typical teen stuff to me.

But while he was on the subject of family, Smith naturally turned to talking about his wife, Jada, and their shared decision not to attend the Oscars later this month. When asked what it would take for him to change his mind and attend the ceremony, Smith said his boycott wasn’t about him but about a larger “narrowing” of the “imagery” and “tolerance in America.” Obliquely citing the events of Ferguson, Missouri, and #BlackLivesMatter, Smith says his “concern is that Hollywood is reflecting a regressive trend. Hollywood is supposed to lead and be the most diverse and the most inclusive.”

Smith advocates seriously for all kinds of storytelling to shape the future of Hollywood, but he is clear that there is one story we won’t be seeing anytime soon. Referencing one of the most maligned movies of his career, Smith said with the biggest laugh of all that “there probably will not be a Wild Wild West 2.”
