One has to feel quite a bit for Ivanka Trump. Not only did she follow the messiest night of the Republican National Convention, where Ted Cruz metaphorically slapped her father in the face and broke the fragile image of party unity that only started to crystallize, she had to give the final word on why America should trust Donald Trump, the most unpopular presidential candidate in recent history.

And in her Thursday night introduction to her father, Ivanka did the remarkable: she simply pretended she was speaking at the Democratic Party’s convention, and delivered a speech about the wage gap, maternal leave, and other liberal ideals.

It made sense: Ivanka opened by saying that, “like many of my fellow millennials, I do not consider myself categorically Republican or Democrat.” (She did not register to vote in time to vote in New York’s primary election.)

The eldest Trump daughter shared tales of her father communing with blue-collar workers on the Trump Organization’s construction sites. “Throughout my entire life, I have witnessed his empathy toward others,” Trump said. “Especially those who are suffering.”

“Billionaire executives don’t usually ask the people doing the work about the work,” Ivanka said, suggesting that her father not like other billionaire executives.

A big part of the speech’s message was that Donald Trump supports women. “When a woman becomes a mother [in the Trump Organization],” Ivanka said, “she is supported, not shut out.”

Sounding a Bernie Sanders-like note, Ivanka noted the “injustice of college graduates crippled by student debt.”

All in all, she said, her father “will be your greatest, your truest, and most loyal champion.”

It was an upbeat performance—one that was largely out of step with the themes of the evening, and, indeed, the convention overall.

Out of all the Trump children who took the stage in Cleveland, Ivanka was the only one who could, perhaps, bridge the adoration gap between Trump’s supporters and the rest of the country. Not only does she demonstrate an agreeability quite unlike her father, she also boasts a national profile built not only from her appearances on The Apprentice, but also from her own successful business ventures inside and outside of The Trump Organization.

Of course, this likability would swiftly be undone by Trump’s incredibly dark speech.
