Christian Siriano Calls Michelle Obama Wearing His Dress at the D.N.C. "an Honor" [Updated]

The custom-made dress marked FLOTUS’s second time wearing the designer.

Update: July 26, 2016, 2:30 P.M.: When reached for comment, Christian Siriano had this to say about Michelle Obama wearing his creation at the D.N.C. last night: “It is an incredible honor to have such an amazing woman wear one of my creations. I am in absolute awe.”

The dress is a slightly customized version of a cobalt blue one from Siriano's pre-fall 2016 collection.

Royal blue continues its moment in the sun this year. Beyoncé and the Duchess of Cambridge both wore cobalt earlier this summer, and now Michelle Obama is continuing the shade’s regal run. She wore a royal-blue dress by Christian Siriano for her speech at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia last night.

According to the Associated Press, the dress was custom-made for FLOTUS, and it included a fitted bodice that flared into an A-line skirt, with high-belt detailing around her waist. Siriano has dressed Obama once before; she wore a black dress from the designer on July 12 when she attended the memorial service for the five police officers gunned down by a sniper in Dallas.

On this much-happier occasion, it made sense that Obama went with a Siriano creation again. He’s an American designer, and her speech at the D.N.C. spoke about how the new president will fit into our country’s ongoing historical narrative. FLOTUS has reached for American designers many times in the past—she’s worn ensembles by Vera Wang, Tom Ford, and Tracy Reese, to name a few.

Last night, Obama kept her accessories simple to offset her cobalt dress. She wore silver earrings and matching silver pumps, almost giving the outfit a star-spangled effect. The ensemble was very patriotic, and so was her message: “Don’t ever let anyone tell you that this country isn’t great, that somehow we need to make America great again, because right now this is the greatest country on Earth.”
