Downton Abbey: Why Edith Finally Took Righteous Revenge on Mary

It’s a sisterly smack down six seasons in the making.

It’s been six seasons and 13 exquisitely-costumed years of English history in the making but Edith finally got to tell Lady Mary what she thought of her on this week’s episode of Downton Abbey. And, yes, it was every bit as satisfying and deserved as you might have hoped. The sisterly smack down—which made its way stateside last November thanks to a U.K. teaser—was the highlight of a dizzying penultimate episode of the show’s final season.

If you’ve given up watching the series but still want to know how and why Edith finally got her revenge, the facts are these. Edith was considering marrying Bertie Pelham and, because his cousin conveniently dropped dead in Tangiers, she would become a Marquess, meaning Edith would wind up the most landed member of the Crawley family. This, as you might imagine, didn’t sit well with her older, awful sister Mary. Here, I’ll let Michelle Dockery’s face eloquently convey the moment.

Mary, unwilling to play second fiddle to Edith, decides to pour cold water on Lady Edith’s happy ending by bringing up her sister’s illegitimate daughter in front of Bertie. Seriously, how much of a monster do you have to be to want to destroy Edith finally getting some happiness for a change?

Mary claimed she thought Bertie already knew but Edith knows a scheme when she smells one and gives Mary the dressing down she deserves. It was, as Edith put it, “the row we all knew was coming. I’m not sorry. I’m just sorry we didn’t have it years ago.” And just in case you want Edith’s stinging words tattooed on your heart, they are as follows:

Just shut up! … Who do you think you’re talking to? Mama? Your maid? I know you. I know you to be a nasty, jealous, scheming bitch. … You’re a bitch! And not content with ruining your own life, you’re determined to ruin mine. … Don’t demean yourself by trying to justify your venom. Just go. … And you’re wrong, you know, as you so often are. Henry’s perfect for you. You’re just too stupid and stuck-up to see it. Still, at least he’s gotten away from you, which is something to give thanks for, I suppose.

Yeouch, this isn’t your mother’s Masterpiece Theater.

Tom got in on the fun telling Mary, “You ruined Edith’s life today. How many lives are you going to wreck just to smother your own misery? … You’re a coward, Mary. Just like all bullies, you’re a coward.” Such a satisfying moment so long in the making.

Of course, Mary will have her happy ending after all and, thanks to Edith’s scathing remarks about Henry Talbot (Matthew Goode) and some other below-stairs inspirations, Lady Mary decided to marry Henry despite his penchant for fast cars. So, yes, you can’t keep a Crawley down for long.

At the urging of the Dowager Countess— “You are the only woman I know who likes to think herself cold and selfish and grand. … Make peace with your sister, then make peace with yourself.”—Mary reconciled with Edith. Edith sort of gave her sister a pass saying, “You were unhappy, so you wanted me to be unhappy too. Now that you’re happy you’ll be nicer for a while.”

As for Edith’s happy ending, well, there’s still one more episode to go and, if we know anything by now, it’s that Downton Abbey loves a wedding. So cross your fingers that Edith will finally get a wedding day where the groom sticks around until the happy end.
