Fired on Friday, two days before he would have become eligible for a full pension, ex-F.B.I. deputy director Andrew McCabe may prove yet another invaluable asset to special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. Like former F.B.I. director James Comey, McCabe reportedly took detailed notes and memos about his interactions with the president, and according to Axios, McCabe has turned those memos over to the Mueller investigation—including those that corroborate Comey’s account of his own firing.

The news made its way to Donald Trump, who ramped up his Twitter attacks on McCabe Sunday morning, accusing Comey of lying under oath and doubting the memos’ veracity:

A source tells CNN that Mueller does indeed have memos from McCabe, who told CNN that he had had three in-person conversations and one phone call with the president. Apparently, during those interactions, the president would repeatedly ask McCabe, “What was it like when your wife lost? . . . So, tell me, what was it like to lose?” in reference to his wife Jill McCabe’s failed run for a Virginia Senate seat in 2015. Trump’s personal lawyer John Dowd has denied to Axios that the president ever said that.

Trump also accused Mueller of having political bias, with a team of only Democrats and zero Republicans, and concluded with his usual refrain of “NO COLLUSION.”

Trump’s attacks come just a day after Dowd released a statement calling for McCabe’s firing to be the end of the Russia investigation: “I pray that Acting Attorney General Rosenstein will follow the brilliant and courageous example of the FBI Office of Professional Responsibility and Attorney General Jeff Sessions and bring an end to alleged Russia collusion investigation manufactured by McCabe’s boss James Comey based upon a fraudulent and corrupt dossier,” Dowd said.
