Kanye West had his four minutes of fame at the MTV Video Music Awards, as promised, before debuting his new video for “Fade” featuring singer Teyana Taylor. He walked out on the stage to that line from “Famous” before announcing, "I came here to present my new video, but before I do that . . . I'ma talk.”

Ye conceded he might lose Video of the Year to Beyoncé, but explained “I can't be mad. I'm always wishing for Beyoncé to win, so.” He said that he made the “Famous” video “for people to understand just how blessed we are. It was an expression of our now—our fame right now—us on the inside of the TV. The audacity to put Anna Wintour right next to Donald Trump. I mean, I put Ray J in there, bro. This is fame, bro. I see you Amber! My wife is a G; not many people’s wives let them say that.”

As a non-explanation about his current relationship with Taylor Swift, the rapper offered, “People tell me, ‘Yooo, [indistinct] Taylor.’ I love all y'all. That's why I called her."

Next, he moved on to a favorite talking point, that is comparing himself to other people: “I talk to older, rich people, a.k.a. white, and they tell me don't compare yourself to Steve Jobs, don't compare yourself to [Walt] Disney.” He named three things that keep the disadvantaged down—“Taking away their esteem, taking away their resources, taking away their role models”—then wrapped it up with the following: “Tonight we here to have fun. I'm standing in front of my idol Puff Daddy. I'm standing in front of my wife Kim Kardashian West. I’m standing in front of the future Chance the Rapper. We are undeniably the influencers, the thought leaders."

“Famous” was nominated for “Best Male Video,” but lost to Drake’s “Hotline Bling,” and West’s strange bedfellows compilation is nominated for “Video of the Year” as well. The video, which debuted at a live unveiling at the L.A. Forum before heading straight to Tidal in June, pictured realistic reproductions of celebrities like Anna Wintour, Donald Trump, Rihanna, Chris Brown, Taylor Swift, and the Wests themselves naked in a giant bed together. Werner Herzog even said it’s a riot!

West’s storied history at the V.M.A.s has gone from “Imma let you finish” in 2009 to last year’s presidential bid, with many memorable performances in between. And now we can add ”I see you Amber!” to that list.
