See the Surprisingly Sexy Side of Tulip Fever

An exclusive look at a raunchy new trailer, starring Alicia Vikander and Dane DeHaan as a pair of adulterous lovers.

At long last, the film world’s relentless curiosity about Tulip Fever will soon be sated. The period piece, which was shot in 2014 and originally set to be released last summer, is now set to bow Sept. 1.

In this eye-popping new red band trailer, premiering exclusively on VF.com, Alicia Vikander stars as the wife of a bullish aristocrat (Christoph Waltz, in a dashing Elizabethan ruff), who later falls for the winsome painter (Dane DeHaan) commissioned to do her portrait. The two quickly begin a steamy affair, which takes center stage in the promo; previously, a 30-second trailer for the film was declared too scandalous to show on television.

However, then they fall in love—that pesky little emotion—and become set on escaping their austere surroundings and starting a new life together. Of course, that proves to be impossible, as apparently everyone in their inner circle knows about the affair—including a bitter maid who gets roped into their plans and a stern, nunnish Judi Dench.

“Never underestimate God,” Dench warns DeHaan’s character. “He forgets nothing.”

Tulip Fever is based on the book of the same name and also stars Cara Delevingne, Zach Galifianakis, and Jack O’Connell. It is directed by Justin Chadwick.
