Someone Wants You to Know Ivanka Trump Donated $50,000 to Help Kids at the Border

Could it be . . . Ivanka Trump??

As outrage swelled over Donald Trump’s uniquely cruel policy of separating immigrant children from their parents and throwing said children in cages, many paused and thought to themselves, Wait a second, isn’t there a senior White House employee with the president’s ear who’s supposedly all about advocating for families? And the answer was, Well, sort of. But, lately, sentient nude pump Ivanka Trump has had her hands full posting tone-deaf photos on Instagram and making up Chinese proverbs on Twitter, which doesn’t leave a lot of time for speaking out against unimaginable cruelty. Behind the scenes, the First Daughter-turned-senior-adviser apparently mentioned something to the president about the whole thing—along the lines of, “Daddy, what are we doing about this?” her father recalled during a recent Hill meeting—but her worries appeared more rooted in the fact that images of traumatized children do not make for great P.R. And speaking of P.R., someone wants us to know that Ivanka donated a bunch of money to a pastor who’s dealing with the problem “Daddy” created:

An evangelical leader who asked to not be named tells CBN News Ivanka Trump donated $50,000 to a church in Plano, Texas, after hearing about its efforts to help immigrant children at the southern border.

The source says President Trump’s daughter learned about Prestonwood Baptist Church and its outreach on Twitter. . . . The source tells CBN News Ivanka Trump reached out to Pastor Jack Graham and made the private donation before the announcement of her father’s executive order, which takes steps to keep immigrant families together at the border.

So, that’s . . . nice. Not as nice as taking a vocal stand against an administration with a horrible attitude toward immigrants and refugees, but it’s a start! Still, one wonders how word of this secret donation made its way to the media. While we would never suggest that someone in Javanka’s personal press shop was the source here, some might note that it’s become a regular occurrence for reports portraying Ivanka in a light that doesn’t hurt shoe and handbag sales to surface around the time she’s being called out in the press for her deafening silence. (See: Charlottesville.)

Anyway, that’s all water under the bridge, so let’s join the president’s daughter in thanking the president for putting a stop to the policy his own attorney general enacted in April:

Trump is apparently serious about his “tax all the foreign cars!” idea

On Friday, in a move that everyone saw coming because they very thoughtfully announced it several weeks back, Europe hit the U.S. with tariffs on $3 billion worth of goods as retaliation for Trump’s steel and aluminum tariffs. Even though the measures only came in response to the U.S.’s levies, they were seemingly enough to get the president all riled up. And you know what happens when the leader of the free world gets riled up: he starts tweeting about economic policies that will ultimately hurt his own constituents:

This is a dumb idea for a host of reasons, not the least of which is that American consumers will be the ones who pay the price. Also, as New York’s Eric Levitz points out, the policy doesn’t make a whole lot of sense if you’re taking real-life facts and figures into account, which is clearly something the Trump administration would never do:

It’s worthing noting that, before Trump triggered a trade war, U.S. exports to the E.U. faced an average tariff of just 3 percent; America’s domestic carmakers were already highly profitable; and most major foreign automakers operate large plants in the United States. Thus, it’s unclear what problem Trump’s car tariff is supposed to solve—unless the president believes that car prices in the U.S. are intolerably low.

Speaking of dumb ideas . . .

Another fun potential consequence of the trade wars Trump seems intent on dragging us into? A recession, according to economists at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. “Our calculations suggest that a major trade war would lead to a significant reduction in growth,” Michelle Meyer, wrote in a note obtained by CNBC on Friday. “A decline in confidence and supply-chain disruptions could amplify the trade shock, leading to an outright recession. We continue to believe that the probability of a full-blown trade war is low but the risks are rising and it remains a key uncertainty to our outlook.”

Chinese media has some thoughts about Trump’s tariffs

And, spoiler alert, they’re not very complimentary, though they are roughly in line with what everyone outside of Peter Navarro and Wilbur Ross thinks:

“The woes the administration is inflicting on Chinese companies do not simply translate into boons for U.S. enterprises and the U.S. economy,” it said in an editorial headlined “Protectionism symptom of paranoid delusions.”
