In the penultimate episode of The Walking Dead’s half season, the fate of missing fan favorite Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) was finally decided thanks to a well-placed Dumpster and a kindly passing Enid. But fans of the comic know that Glenn isn’t exactly out of the zombie-infested woods yet. While the show has historically played fairly fast and loose with the source material, there has been a lot of speculation about Glenn’s destiny. But series show-runner Scott M. Gimple has some good news for those who are still a little worried about Glenn. More to come after the spoiler warning below.

For many Walking Dead fans, the prologue that introduced the Saviors after Sunday night’s midseason finale also seemed to spell doom for Glenn. It’s their leader, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), who kills Glenn by brutally bashing his skull in with a bat covered in barbed wire. If the Saviors are here, then Glenn can’t be long for this world. Right? Well, maybe not.

Gimple told Entertainment Weekly:

For people who aren’t familiar with [the Saviors], I don’t want to say much. Though I do believe you should read the comics, if you haven’t yet you’re going to — I hope — have some exciting and fun discovery as the layers are peeled away on that mystery. And if you have read the comics, there are a lot of moments directly out of the book when it comes to the Saviors. And then some really cool expansions of the comic story. And some hard left turns from the comic story that do eventually wind up with a lot of very familiar small scenes from the book and big scenes from the book.

Those “hard left turns” are likely to be what Glenn fans cling to the hardest. The show will do its best to keep us on our toes when it comes to Glenn’s death, which, thanks to the fake out during the first half of the season, has become one of the worst-kept secrets in book-spoiler history. In fact, its worth asking if Glenn’s death can even have an impact after the emotional roller coaster of his dangerous dive from that Dumpster earlier this year. Would the show really put fans through that wringer twice?

Many have already predicted that one of those “hard left turns” Gimple mentioned could be a different character taking Glenn’s place. Someone as beloved as Glenn? Get ready to weep into your ponchos, Daryl fans. There’s rampant speculation that everyone’s favorite crossbow-carrying character will be the one to go head to bat with Lucille, and it may happen sooner than you think. Andrew Lincoln told the Huffington Post that he dropped his script when he read Episode 9—the midseason premiere slated for February 14. With actor Norman Reedus taking on more and more side projects, including a motorcycle series for AMC, some fans are already busting out the riot gear in anticipation of his departure.

There are other options here. It could be Abraham—already dead at this point in the comics—who winds up meeting Lucille. Or it might end up being Glenn after all. Deanna (R.I.P.) will be the first to tell you that it’s hard to outrun a death sentence on The Walking Dead.
