Months after penning a fiery letter to his daughters about Donald Trump’s surprising electoral win, __Aaron Sorkin is ready to lambast the president once more. At the Writer’s Guild Awards West Coast ceremony on Sunday, the Oscar-winning writer was on hand to receive the Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award. Fittingly, he used the majority of his time on stage to deliver a Network-inspired acceptance speech, blasting conservative rhetoric about “coastal elites” and what “real Americans” believe. Sorkin also handily addressed attacks on mainstream media outlets and refugees “seeking a safe haven”—all without mentioning Trump directly by name. The anti-POTUS theme was also deeply felt at the Writer’s Guild Award ceremony in New York City, held simultaneously with the one in Los Angeles—where comedians like Lewis Black openly mocked the president and his inner circle.
Sorkin’s award was warmly presented by Newsroom star Jeff Daniels. “Great writers have singular voice, a command of the craft, and something to say. That’s Aaron Sorkin,” Daniels said before welcoming Sorkin to the stage.
Sorkin thanked the Guild, his former collaborators, and his managerial team before getting to politics. “From time to time, I write stories about politics, and so it was suggested to me that I might have something to say about the situation in which we currently find ourselves. It’ll come as no surprise that I do,” he said.
