Shut It Down

Cardi B’s Ex Interrupted Her Show to Beg Forgiveness

“I’m not saying that I’m getting back together with him,” Cardi said of the incident. “I just don’t like that bashing online thing.”

The audience at Cardi B’s Rolling Loud performance in Los Angeles on Saturday was privy to a surprise intermission, as the singer’s estranged husband interrupted the show in an attempt to woo her back. Rapper Offset appeared onstage midway through her set, flanked by an arrangement of roses that spelled out, “TAKE ME BACK CARDI.” Clearly having none of Offset’s theatrics, Cardi B shut down the gesture, spoke to her husband off-mic, and paused her performance until Offset left the stage.

Cardi initially announced their separation in an Instagram post in early December. (The two have one child together, Kulture Khiari.) Migos rapper Offset has since made several public declarations of intent, including a December 14 Instagram post in which he stated, “I only got one birthday wish and that’s to get my wife back Cardi.”

Shortly after Saturday’s concert, Cardi B addressed the incident in her own series of Instagram posts, the first of which thanked fans for their support and respect during a regrettable public dispute. In the second, she asked supporters not to harass Offset for his behavior, invoking S.N.L. star Pete Davidson’s recent struggles with online bullying.

“I know I see a lot of people bashing me because they think that I’m defending my baby father I’m getting back together with him,” Cardi explained in the post. “I’m not saying that I’m getting back together with him. I just don’t like that bashing online thing. Just earlier you just saw how Pete Davidson was talking about he don’t even want to be on this Earth because mad people be keep coming at him every single day. I wouldn’t want my baby father to have that feeling because of millions of people bashing him every day. That’s a nasty feeling.”

Some have expressed concern over Offset’s display, which they pointed out both upstaged Cardi B’s performance and appeared to unsettle her. “This man showed up at her workplace—one of the biggest moments in her career—and interrupted her unannounced because he wanted her back from some shit that he did,” Frederick Joseph wrote on Twitter. “However Cardi’s handled it . . . it doesn’t negate the fact that it’s manipulative, and really borderline abusive.”
