Thank God for Pete Davidson and Ariana Grande. No, really. It’s hard to look at headlines these days, and these two kids are really giving us something to delight in. Their fast-track engagement has got a lot of people puzzled, but Davidson is expressing so much joy about it that, really, we should maybe just lean in to the entertainment factor of it all.

On The Tonight Show Wednesday, Jimmy Fallon told Davidson that he didn’t have to get engaged to Grande to come on the show. “But I did, though,” Davidson replied. He went on: “I feel like I won a contest. So sick. It’s fucking lit, Jimmy.”

Yes, this is a man describing his engagement as “sick” and “lit.” This is not an X Games competition or any of the 17 various things on this BuzzFeed list. Davidson has been dating his fiancée for approximately a month, as far as the public has been able to tell, and now she’s wearing a $93,000 ring. Maybe “lit” really is the correct descriptor here.

“It’s so funny walking down the street, ’cause, like, dudes are walking by, and they’re like,” Davidson said, tipping his hat. “You ever see that Derek Jeter commercial when he’s, like, retiring and everybody just tips his hat?”

So, yeah, Davidson is doing great. Then again, he is a little more aware of his place in the news cycle than we might have given him credit for. “Why do people care?” he told Fallon. ”It’s very weird. It’s weird ’cause the president is trying to pardon himself, and he’s, like, fucking a porn star. Shouldn’t we care about that?”
